Fabric backdrop and vinyl floor – how to create a photo set?

Why do we recommend fabric for the wall and vinyl for the floor? See the differences and learn how to create a complete professional photo set.

A backdrop manufacturer’s guide

At Pastelowe Marzenia, we use fabric as the photographic backdrop and vinyl as the floor. This combination delivers better backdrop colours, gives you more freedom when positioning your lights and provides a durable surface beneath the models.

The short answer

Choose a fabric photographic backdrop for the vertical wall. Fabric reproduces colours more effectively and gives you greater freedom when positioning the lighting. We recommend vinyl exclusively as a photographic floor—a durable and stable surface that can be matched to the selected backdrop design.

What is the difference between a fabric backdrop and a vinyl floor?

These are not two interchangeable types of photographic backdrop. Each product has a different role within the photo set. A fabric backdrop is hung vertically behind the person being photographed. High-quality PVC vinyl is laid on the floor to create a stable and attractive finish at the bottom of the frame.

In our experience, fabric produces a better photographic result: it reproduces colours more accurately, reduces unwanted reflections and gives the photographer greater freedom when positioning light sources. This is why Pastelowe Marzenia always recommends fabric for the vertical backdrop.

When should you choose a fabric photographic backdrop?

We recommend a fabric backdrop for use as the vertical part of a studio set and for photo sessions on location. Its surface reproduces colours effectively and offers greater freedom when shaping the light. You can position your lights to suit the model and the character of the frame without the limitations associated with using vinyl vertically.

The fabric is lightweight, can be washed and ironed according to the care instructions, and its resistance to UV radiation helps preserve the quality of the print. It is suitable for children’s, family, school, Christmas and portrait photography, as well as many other types of photo session.

The B1 fire-retardant certificate is a valuable advantage when working in studios, schools, kindergartens and other spaces where particular attention is paid to the safety of the materials being used.

A fabric backdrop is particularly practical when you:

  • regularly transport your photo sets by car,
  • work in several different locations,
  • frequently change backdrop designs between sessions,
  • need a large format with as little weight as possible,
  • want a backdrop that can be washed and ironed.

When is a vinyl floor the right choice?

We recommend vinyl for the floor section of a photo set. It is made from high-quality PVC material with a matt surface and creates a stable base for models, furniture and decorations. The printed design can represent wooden boards, brick, concrete or another surface suited to the character of the session.

When combining a fabric backdrop with a vinyl floor, we consider the scale of the design, perspective and colours of both elements. A well-matched set creates a coherent scene in which the transition between the backdrop and the floor does not distract from the person being photographed.

Our experience

We do not show digital designs alone

We print selected designs and test them in our own studio. We check the scale of the design, colour reproduction, perspective, floor matching and the results produced by different types of lighting. This allows you to see what a particular backdrop looks like after printing and during a real photo session.

Common mistakes when choosing a backdrop

  • Choosing solely on the basis of the design. The material, size and hanging method are equally important.
  • Leaving no space between the model and the backdrop. The right distance helps reduce shadows and create depth in the frame.
  • Using the wrong scale for the photo set. The elements in the design should suit the age of the models and the planned framing.
  • Combining the backdrop with a random floor. The colours, perspective and proportions should create one coherent scene.
